How Big We Are!
We went to the doctor on Friday and the twins are putting on weight. Last week they were a little more than five and a half pounds and this week, both were seven pounds! We are starting to outgrow the preemie clothing and so we have to say goodbye to some favorite outfits.
Felix brought home balloons for the twins to celebrate how well they gained weight. (The flowers were for me!)

Scary times...
What a difference a week makes. Unfortunately this entry is not a light-hearted one. On Monday morning, after one of his feedings, Lucas temporarily stopped breathing and proceeded to turn gray then blue. While we were able to get him breathing on his own again without any intervention, the paramedics wanted him to go to the hospital to have him checked out.
By the time we arrived in the ER, his color was much better, but the pediatric attending physician wanted to keep him overnight for observation. This turned into two nights since while his color was a little better, he was still struggling for breaths occasionally. Doctors ruled out an infection and pneumonia, which was good. We have some medicine for him now, and he is doing much better. I stayed with Lucas throughout most of the day and throughout the nights. Felix would come right after work and stay with him and feed him, while I went home to see Liliana, shower and change. And of course Nana was home with Liliana...thank goodness someone else was here!
Lucas was one of only two kids on the pediatric floor while we were there. His bed was very similar to the crib from the NICU, just a little bigger.

A little light reading
Special delivery at 6 Birch Street. We recently ordered some old time favorites of kids books in Spanish. Turns out every Dr. Seuss book is also written in Spanish these days, and they change the wording around so it still rhymes! What is Dr. Seuss without rhyming? My favorite Dr. Seuss book is "And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street" (the blue book in the picture) Not a very well know one, but my favorite. Now, our kids can experience these too...and en Espanol!

Out for a walk and a big day for Lucas!
While the twins are still sleeping in our room, we have been slowly introducing them to their cribs. For example, we let one lie in the crib while we are changing the other one, we play the mobile, etc. Liliana really seemed to enjoy herself last night in the crib.
Just goofing off...it was nice to be outside!
And finally, a BIG day for Lucas. This morning, as he was put on his stomach, he proceeded to kick and squirm and roll himself over onto his back. Thinking it was a fluke, we put him back down on his stomach and he rolled over AGAIN! And Felix reported that he did it a third time while I was out today...good job little man! But all this exercising wore him out...
We went for a walk yesterday. Our neighbor, Jack, who was outside playing catch with his son, was nice enough to take this picture for us..

just a lazy weekend...
Doctors recommend that although we don't put the twins down on their stomachs to sleep, it is good to give them some "tummy time" to help them build those muscles. Lucas seems to work at it quite well...kicking and pushing up with his upper body as much as he can.
Liliana prefers to just sleep most of the time.

We discovered the amazing effects of the vibrating bouncy chair this week..both kids LOVE it. Thanks again Pete and Christie!

The nursery is all done....
The nursery was somewhat put on the back burner with the unexpected early arrival of the twins. And despite my neurotic desire to have it all done before they were born it really wasn't necessary (or possible) since 1. they won't be sleeping there until sometime in the spring and 2. we have much more important things to do with two newborns at home.
Felix has done almost all of this (I just put things in the closet and sheets on the beds).

Lots going on today....
It's so hard to get a good shot of these two with their eyes open at the same time these days...got a pretty good one today....
These were made by two of my students...Annie and Genna...they made these booties and hats by hand! How totally impressive! They were dropped off at the house today.
And finally, we went to see Dr. Sessa again today to check the babies weights. Liliana increased from 5 lbs. 2 oz. to 5 lbs. 8.5 oz. and Lucas (who only gained one oz. the previous week) gained 11 oz. to go from 4 lb. 14 oz to 5 lb. 9 oz. ! So the weight seems to be coming on now and we feel better. They definitely feel heavier. Below Felix is getting Lucas dressed after our visit.

A ride in our stroller....
This past weekend was so nice that we decided it was time to take the stroller for a whirl. For some reason we took a picture of the twins in the stroller INSIDE the house and not outside. Both seemed to enjoy the ride tremendously...had the same effect as the car does..conks them out. A lot of our neighbors were outside due to the warm temps and we were quite the attraction as we walked around the neighborhood!
And I guess from this picture it is obvious why swaddling never seemed to really sit well with Liliana...this is her most favorite position. :-)
